Today, Earl ¨Buddy¨ Carter, a Republican member of Congress from Georgia, introduced a bill that would enable President Trump to buy Greenland and rename it Red White and Blueland. Now before we dismiss Congressman Carter´s bill as just another bit of lunacy oozing out of Georgia, I suggest we consider it seriously: Let me start the serious consideration process by suggesting another application of what I shall call. the Buddy Carter Doctrine. Renaming the Chesapeake Bay as the Bay of Virginia.
Governor Youngkin could get the ball rolling by introducing a bill in the Virginia General Assembly, which would officially recognize the Chesapeake Bay as the Bay of Virginia. First, doing so would cement Youngkin´s legacy as a leading statesman from Virginia and, let's face it, Virginia got off to a good start producing statesmen, but it has been lacking in that endeavor for the last two hundred years. Second, it would endear Youngkin to the Trump voters who Youngkin needs should he decide to throw his sweater vest into the ring for the Republican presidential nomination in 2028 or, should Donald Trump, Jr. or Ivanka take up the mantle that year, in 2032 or 2036, assuming Eric does not inherit the White House from his brother or sister. Of course, Youngkin needs to act fast before Maryland gets into the name changing game. Please don't mention this to anyone in Annapolis.
Other than the possible renaming of Greenland, there is precedence for the Bay of Virginia, nee Chesapeake Bay, most of it recent. Denali may revert to Mt. McKinley and the Gulf of Mexico is now the Gulf of America. Even Google is good with that and if Google is good with it, then by golly, the rest of us should fall in line.
Virginia has a legitimate claim to the Chesapeake. First and foremost, as any student of fourth grade Virginia history is well aware, Virginia saw it first, in 1606! Maryland didn't even exist until 1632! Secondly, ships cannot enter or leave the Bay without sailing through Virginia. And third, Maryland got dibs on the Potomac River as a result of the Maryland Virginia Compact of 1785. It's only fair that in this day and age of renaming bodies of water, mountains and other natural whatnots, that Virginia´s claim to the Bay is recognized.
The Bay of Virginia! It´s an idea whose time has come. Even Google would sign on to it.
