Is a government shutdown the only viable path forward? [1]

I was watching Senator Andy Kim (D-NJ) on what passes for our local news on NJ PBS, and with the next continuing resolution coming up in just a few weeks, Sen. Kim posited the idea that the Democrats should not bail the Republicans out to keep the government functioning and possibly default on our debts. While the Republicans own all three branches of our government, they seem to be incapable of passing any meaningful legislation without Democratic support. And that may be, in reality, the only lever of influence the Democrats can employ, IF they grow a backbone and unite against the lawlessness that has marked the beginning of the end of democracy in America.

I am not a fan of shutting down the federal government.

But, even though my main source of income is from Social Security these days, I’d be willing to forgo it (for a while anyway) if it were to wake up the Republicans to the damage they are doing to the Republic, that is the United States.

Today, Musk inveighed against the law firms that are filing lawsuits against the Trump administration with an implicit threat. Shakespear wrote, about 500 hundred years ago, “First thing, we kill all the lawyers”. But, what a lot of people don’t realize is that, those words were spoken by a would be usurper to the king to overthrow the lawful (not awful) king. Today, the lawyers in question are, in fact, defending the rule of law against a president, who desperately wants to be king.

In other words, a usurper.

As, Abraham Lincoln wrote, “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal…

..It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Shall we be a government of the people, or a government of the privileged?

It can’t be both.

The Civil War isn’t over… yet.
