The history of outboard motors—portable motors that could be attached to the stern of a boat—began in 1896 when the American Motor Company of Long Island, New York, built 25 portable boat motors. In 1908, Ole Evinrude produced his first outboard motor and the following year, Ole and his wife Bess formed the Evinrude Detachable Rowboat Motor Company. In 1914, they sold the company.

In 1920, Ole Evinrude formed the Evinrude Light Twin Outboard Motor Company and the following year, the Johnson brothers—Lou, Harry, and Clarence—began production of a totally new lightweight smooth operating outboard.

Briggs and Straton purchased Evinrude Motors in 1928.

The Willapa Seaport Museum in Raymont, Washington includes some outboard motors.
