The misleading search for fraud and waste [1]

Imagine you were trying to save money. Would you:

a). Look at what you spend and see if it is necessary?

b). Ask your bank if you could poke around in their computer systems?

A code audit can be very valuable. I have been in the business over 40 years and have conducted many.

We look to see if the code is maintainable and well documented

We look to see if has performance bottlenecks

We look to see if there is an easy way to break the security (hold that thought).

What we don’t do is go digging around the customer’s data, because that is none of our business.

Many government applications are still written in COBOL and were possibly written by Charles Babbage himself. DOGE’s computer developers (who are younger than my ski suit) do not often have skills in COBOL.

Financial auditors (that’s a real job) look at a company’s books to see if there is fraud and waste. You probably see where I am going here.

Musk’s interns, even with read only access, can copy all the data they are allowed to see, plus have access to the underlying operating system that runs the applications — they can not only see if there are security holes, but possibly create their own.

Are you worried yet?
