The Only Thing Worse Than Broken Promises Are Kept Ones: A Look at Trump’s First Month of His Second [1]

As we near the one-month mark of Donald J. Trump’s second presidential term, we’ve been given our first look at how the nation perceives his performance. A compilation of data from PEW, CBS, IPSOS, and other sources shows Trump’s approval rating has risen by five points overall — and by ten compared to this time in his administration eight years ago. But is this shift in public sentiment due to a renewed sense of moral standing? I had to control my laughter just writing that sentence. It would be even more humorous to suggest that it is due to his policies having an extraordinarily positive impact on the American people. So, what’s behind this dramatic swing? A deeper dive into the polls reveals that the biggest shift comes from voters’ perception of Trump’s success in following through on his campaign promises. His 2024 platform was built on threats of tariffs, mass deportations, dismantling the Department of Education, restricting transgender rights, and other similarly controversial policies. If you’ve been paying attention over the past 20 days, you’d know that most of these pledges have either been enacted or had their foundations laid. Clearly, Trump is delivering on his promises far more aggressively than in his first term. But why is this making him more popular? History offers a cautionary example. Another leader — one whose name has been invoked perhaps too often in regard to Donald Trump — also built his power by keeping his word. He promised to create a strong central government, unite native speakers under one nation, impose special laws for foreigners, and control the media. While the comparison may seem tired, the unsettling similarities between a certain fascist regime and Trump’s trajectory are difficult to ignore. A president’s success shouldn’t be measured simply by their ability to check campaign promises off a list. It should be defined by their impact on the nation’s well-being. Yet, in our desire for stability, we’ve chosen to ignore the warning signs, focusing only on the present moment while disregarding the long-term consequences. History has already shown us where this road leads. It is in the hands of the people to change its direction.
