Getting rid of the Social Security duplicate numbers will COST billions and ruin Social Security [1]

Emily Singer has a great story here about the MuskRat and the social security database. The killer quote is here
"Just learned that the social security database is not de-duplicated, meaning you can have the same SSN many times over, which further enables MASSIVE FRAUD!! Your tax dollars are being stolen," Musk wrote.
So, we need to clean out all duplicate numbers. This will be a disaster because part of the reason the database is not cross-referenced is because undocumented workers HAVE TO HAVE an SSN to be employed. Employers have been fighting the social security database clean up for years. Why? Because many of the duplicates are under different names and used by undocumented workers rather than by the actual individual holding that number.
Unauthorized workers contribute taxes but are ineligible for benefits. In 2022, unauthorized immigrants contributed $25.7 billion in Social Security taxes, typically by working under borrowed or fraudulent Social Security numbers. From the Bipartisan Policy Center —bipartisanpolicy.org/....
The duplicate numbers are actually the opposite of fraud — it is people using borrowed numbers to work, pay social security taxes, and receive NO social security in the end. Musk is actually cutting the social security contributions by billions without reducing payments if he cleans it out and cutting US employment by millions as employers find out they can’t hire the undocumented workers without criminal liability. Those workers won’t be able to work and pay social security without getting any benefits.
This does, however, add an really strong arrow in the get all the undocumented workers to leave the US.
Just another instance of using a fact in a completely inaccurate manner to hurt everyone.
