I can hardly keep track of all the RESISTANCE this week! NYT summarizes:
“No president should be able to rewrite 120-plus years of interpretation of the Constitution with a stroke of a pen,” said Dan Rayfield, Oregon’s attorney general, in an interview. “That is the existential threat.” (NYT)
Matthew J. Platkin, New Jersey’s attorney general, called Mr. Musk “the one wild card” thrown at them. “I’m not even sure Trump knows what he is doing,” Mr. Platkin said of Mr. Musk. “He’s an unelected billionaire running around government, slashing huge amounts of the work force and behaving in all kinds of potentially illegal ways.” (NYT)

But the DOGEbags are still running roughshod over the nation. The CFPB — Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) is offline.
Mr. Musk posted “CFPB RIP,” with an emoji of a gravestone, on X. Hours after Mr. Musk’s post, the home page of the bureau’s website was updated with a “404: Page not found” message. (NYT)
Since its establishment in 2011, CFPB has been a stellar success. Although the main website is “404,” the site listing its successes is still online, showing the reasons why it’s so irritating to DOGE:
$21 billion+ : Amount of monetary compensation, principal reductions, canceled debts, and other consumer relief resulting from CFPB enforcement ($19 billion) and supervisory ($1.7 billion) work.
: Amount of monetary compensation, principal reductions, canceled debts, and other consumer relief resulting from CFPB enforcement ($19 billion) and supervisory ($1.7 billion) work. 205 million+ : Estimated number of consumers or consumer accounts eligible to receive relief from the CFPB’s enforcement and supervisory work.
: Estimated number of consumers or consumer accounts eligible to receive relief from the CFPB’s enforcement and supervisory work. $5 billion+ : Civil money penalties imposed by the CFPB on companies and individuals that violate the law. Civil money penalties are deposited into the CFPB’s victims relief fund (also known as the civil penalty fund), which provides compensation to consumers who have been harmed by violations of federal consumer financial protection law.
: Civil money penalties imposed by the CFPB on companies and individuals that violate the law. Civil money penalties are deposited into the CFPB’s victims relief fund (also known as the civil penalty fund), which provides compensation to consumers who have been harmed by violations of federal consumer financial protection law. $6.1 billion: Estimated amount consumers will save every year due to recent changes in banks’ overdraft and non-sufficient funds (NSF) fee policies. The CFPB's most recent analysis found that the decision of most large banks to eliminate NSF fees will save consumers nearly $2 billion annually. (CFPB website, where the list goes on.)

x It’s Super Bowl Sunday and Donald Trump has done pretty much nothing to lower your grocery costs.
The President needs to buckle down and deliver on his promises.

Resistance continues. Have you met Alt National Park Service?
Over 1.4 million people are following the Alt National Park Service on Facebook. The group, formed by a coalition of 204 National Park Service employees, fifty-two state park employees, nineteen National Forest Service employees, twenty-two EPA employees, four USDA employees, and 128 environmental scientists, is more than just memes. It serves “as the official resistance team for the US National Parks Service,” with a mission to “stand up for the National Park Service to enjoy and preserve the environment for present and future generations.” With posts about climate change, border walls, public lands, and scientific integrity, the Alt National Park Service provides an alternative narrative to an outdated system. (The Humanist)
It was 1.4 million then. There are 3.1 million followers now and more every day. They’ve been one of the biggest voices of citizen resistance against the T***p regime and not just for park issues. You don’t do Facebook? Me neither. But you can find Alt National Park Service on bluesky too.
x We all took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. We will honor our commitment to this country. Proud to be an American. 🇺🇸 — Alt National Park Service (@altnps.bsky.social) February 9, 2025 at 12:58 PM

Sunday Science
The effort to erase “DEI” from NIH, NSF, and other agencies isn’t straightforward.
“Our institution is just scrambling to figure out what DEI is and what programs will be affected,” the doctoral researcher said. “I study the development of disease, which tends to affect populations of certain ethnic and cultural backgrounds more than others. Is that DEI?” Darby Saxbe, a psychology professor at the University of Southern California, said Thursday that she’s not sure if she’ll get the final installment of a $2 million, five-year NIH grant this month as planned. She uses that money to pay the salaries of junior researchers working on the project and doesn’t know if she’ll be able to pay them or cover their health insurance. “Plus, we’re collecting really time-sensitive longitudinal data,” said Saxbe, who explained that her team has scanned the brains of the same group of children for seven years. “If we don’t have funds and can’t collect that data, we can’t just go out and find new families to do the study.” (insidehighered.com)
The US isn’t ready for bird flu in humans, and promoting ant-vaxxers to public health leadership positions isn’t helping.
