This Week in the War on Women: Open Thread and Coping [1]

From elenacarlena:

$Resident $Rump and Subprime Minister Muskrat have been in office 3 weeks exactly as of this coming Monday, but it already seems like 300 years. How is everyone doing? Around here, we’re staying busy trying to make progress on a variety of tacks, zigging and zagging as circumstances require. So this is an open thread, as nobody has time to do much! Please add women’s news items in the Comments below, and your own coping strategies.

It should go without saying that we consider transgender women to be women, but given the anti-science and anti-kindness of the current administration, I will say it; please feel free to add LGBTQ+ items to the Comments, as they are also women's issues.

Liz Warren and crowd. Because I love her energy, and they’re all a lot prettier than $Rump and Muskrat. (h/t Kassidy Burns)

This Week in the War on Women provides a weekly summary of news on women's issues and information on current political actions. We welcome all who are interested to join, to write for us, and to provide relevant links and stories.

A Few News Items To Start Us Rolling

Intersectional feminism

(my favourite category!)

Women Don’t Give Up

Let's hear it for Ellen Weintraub, chair of the FEC. She says $Rump can't ask her to leave. He hasn't gone through proper procedures and she's not leaving. https://www.businessinsider.com/

Update: Friday night, she told Rachel Maddow, according to The Hill:

Well, I’m still considering all of my options at the moment, but I will tell you that my email has been turned off. My computers have been taken. My pass, I believe, no longer gets me into the building.

Sue their rumps off, Ms. Weintraub! (h/t emilyeps)

Economic Rights: India

Women working in the shrimp business in India are exploited. That could change if their major buyers, one of which is the US, insisted on honouring their rights. https://www.cnn.com/

Note that the US Department of Labour list of goods produced by forced labour link in the CNN article is broken, but the same content seems to be here. I downloaded the spreadsheet, India’s shrimp business is on there. But it’s more laborious to look at that content than to just have it posted on the page, which may be the point in the new maladministration. (Never think they won't do something because it’s just petty. Petty is $Rump’s specialty.)

The Trafficking report cited is still up (for now):

The Government of India does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking but is making significant efforts to do so. The government demonstrated overall increasing efforts compared with the previous reporting period; therefore India remained on Tier 2. India’s states and union territories had primary responsibility for anti-trafficking efforts, with policy oversight from the central government. These efforts included significantly increasing prosecutions and convictions of traffickers and increasing investigations and convictions in bonded labor cases specifically. The government issued multiple advisories for state governments to address trafficking at domestic and regional levels, including by strengthening cooperation and improving communication among states. The government increased identification of trafficking victims. However, the government did not meet the minimum standards in several key areas….

And the Corporate Accountability Lab report that they cite is available here, along with donation information if you’d like to donate to their efforts.

Like shrimp? Buy imports? Watch for improvements (if not, maybe buy from somewhere else) in Indian labour enforcement!

Effers

Not surprising, but they regularly piss us all off. Not shocked, not awed; PISSED.

Federal Office on Violence Against Women removes funding opportunities from website: The office, part of the Justice Department, is a key source of grants for nonprofits that work to help victims of domestic violence.

The Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) has removed from its website all information on current funding opportunities and directs visitors not to finalize any applications. This adds to the fear of nonprofits that work to help victims of gender-based violence that a major funding source may dry up. It is unclear whether this pause is temporary. OVW did not return a request for comment on Friday afternoon.

There are private sources for funding of violence-against-women initiatives (see also the “grants for women and girls” that page links to), although they of course do not have government-sized funds available. If you would like to donate to any of these, I imagine that they’d put donations to good use (run them through Charity Navigator and such first, of course).

And Now — A Palate Cleanser
