A historian* once explained world affairs as akin to a poker game in that there are only so many seats at the table. Players may come and go but the number of seats is always limited and the game is always the game Pretty simplistic description but not without merit
The wealthy, however wealth is defined, always run the show. When the wealth is concentrated in a few hands or spread more widely makes a difference in many but not all areas of societies. This is due to the fact all societies must meet basic functional requirements to some degree in order to operate.
In a modern industrial world those basic functional requirements are reliant on sufficient energy production.
Control of energy production based in fossil fuels is tightly controlled by the players at the table. It is the source of their wealth , the wealth that allows them a seat in the game
But the is world changing out of necessity. The value of assets constituting current wealth reliant on profligate use of fossil fuels are being challenged. Challenged out of both necessity and opportunity.
The current occupants in the limited number of seats at the table are well aware new players are going to take their seats. They also know they can't change the game.
So they cheat,, by any and every means imaginable. Especially through authoritarian rule and oppression.
The current occupants of those few seats know their time is limited, they know they cannot win, they know they will be replaced.
None of which is to suggest the new players will be better or even recognizably different but it might be worthwhile for Citizens to pay more attention this time.
