Gaza is a Plot, Not a Plan [1]

My mind is still reeling from the latest bout of Trumpian insanity—his so-called "plan" to take over Gaza, expel or kill its inhabitants, and redevelop it into some fever-dream Atlantic City. Beyond the obvious motivation this lunacy gives terrorists to attempt reprisal attacks against American interests (I wouldn’t want to live or work in a Trump-branded building right now), the idea that this is a "plan" is absurd. The surprise from all parties when Trump announced this madness is proof enough of that.

This is what happens when an addled, vain, easily manipulated, and ignorant man is elected president. If any version of this lunacy comes to pass, no private firm will invest billions of dollars in a territory guaranteed to be wracked by reprisal attacks for decades to come. The idea that Netanyahu would allow anyone other than Israel to control Gaza is equally ridiculous. This isn’t a "plan"—it’s a pretext for Netanyahu to impose his own version of the Final Solution on Gaza, using the U.S. as his straw man and tool. And it's also a test run for what he intends to do in the West Bank.

Leaving aside, for the moment, the overwhelming humanitarian, ethical, and moral atrocities at play, I fail to see how this benefits U.S. national interests. If we proceed down this path, we will spend at least hundreds of billions of dollars, sacrifice untold numbers of American service members, and invite a wave of terrorist assaults against Americans both at home and abroad—all so Israel can finally control Gaza. The only person who stands to gain is Trump himself, as he deepens his ties with Israel and its political backers. This is Netanyahu's vision, and Trump is eating it up.

I remember the run-up to the last Republican war in 2003. Then, too, an unqualified and ignorant president was manipulated into pushing an obviously disastrous agenda that benefited a narrow group at America's expense. It’s happening again. We were used then, and we are being used again.
