On Monday, February 3, Elon Musk, leader of Trump's so-called "Department of Government Efficiency," tweeted on X that he'd spent the weekend "feeding USAID to a wood chipper." This churlish slap at the extralegal hobbling of USAID -- a government agency established by John F. Kennedy -- came from the world's richest man as he illegally shuttered an agency responsible for saving the lives of the most destitute.
I know, because I'm a former employee of one of USAID's largest contractors, and I've helped secure funding for projects across sub-Saharan Africa.
As the AP reports , the United States provided sub-Saharan Africa with more than $6.5 billion in assistance last year. This money goes to feed children, open lifesaving health clinics for women and newborns, and stanch the spread of infectious diseases like cholera and malaria. Because of what the United States represents, USAID is sometimes the only agency to provide support in embattled regions. In Sudan, USAID remained despite a violent civil war and threw a lifeline to children so malnourished that they could not cry.
With Trump's aid freeze, CBS News reports, those children could now perish.
My cartoon showcases Musk's infamous tweet as a man worth nearly half a trillion dollars holds a child over a wood chipper. The pile of wood chips to their right represents the lifesaving food and health programs that Musk so carelessly, recklessly, and mockingly -- and again, illegally -- guttered. And with a sense of empathy that Musk himself lacks, the child he holds tells him that he's sorry he couldn't attend the parties he tweeted that he forewent as he scrubbed USAID.
