Raffensperger Asks Federal Government for Help Suppressing Voters
Shortly after the new U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi was sworn in Wednesday, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) asked her to drop the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) lawsuit challenging the state’s 2021 voter suppression law, S.B. 202. Raffensperger also asked newly minted Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for greater access to immigration data to verify voter registrations two days earlier. In the letter to Bondi, Raffensperger wrote that the Biden DOJ’s lawsuit against S.B. 202 was politically motivated. S.B. 202 is a controversial omnibus voter suppression bill enacted in March 2021 following an election season where a Democratic presidential candidate won Georgia for the first time in over 25 years and a Georgia runoff gave Democrats a Senate majority. The law drew broad condemnation from the Biden administration, former President Jimmy Carter and Georgia-based businesses like Delta Airlines. Major League Baseball (MLB) relocated its All Star Game from Atlanta to Denver that year as a protest of S.B. 202. The law placed numerous restrictions on mail-in voting, shortened the timeline of runoff elections, shortened the early voting period, and banned individuals from giving out food or drinks to voters waiting in line, a practice called “line warming.”

New Research Led by James Hansen Documents Global Warming Acceleration
New research by an international team of climate scientists documents a surge of global warming during the past 15 years that risks shutting down a key ocean current by 2050. During a webinar Tuesday discussing the study, the authors said the rate of global warming since 2010 has increased by more than 50 percent over the rate of warming in the preceding four decades, surging more than 0.7 degrees Fahrenheit (0.4 degrees Celsius) in just the past two years. At the current rate, the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to somewhere between 2.7 degrees and 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit (1.5-2 degrees Celsius) is pretty much dead, said James Hansen, a former NASA climate scientist who led the team and whose 1988 testimony to Congress was one of the early public warnings about the risks of greenhouse gas emissions.
Denmark Steps Up Checks Tracking Russia’s ‘Shadow Fleet’
Denmark’s maritime authority said Wednesday it will strengthen checks of oil tankers cruising its waters to target Russia’s sanctions-busting “shadow fleet” suspected of underwater sabotage. Several undersea telecom and power cables have been severed in the Baltic Sea in recent months, with experts and politicians accusing Russia of orchestrating a hybrid war against Western countries supporting Ukraine. “The Danish maritime authority is stepping up its efforts to ensure that oil tankers... comply with security rules at sea, environmental protection and protection of sailors,” the Sofartsstyrelsen agency said in a statement.
A US Navy pilot narrowly avoided crashing into the sea by as little as 16 feet after a 'catastrophic' failure aboard his aircraft carrier
A US Navy pilot's quick reaction saved himself and his aircraft from a crash in the Indian Ocean after a "catastrophic failure" occurred aboard his aircraft carrier during landing, documents show. The Super Hornet pilot was barreling back onto the deck when he sensed something was drastically wrong. A wire had snapped, and his plane was rolling off the deck. His jet fell to as low as 16 feet above the water before he pulled up on maximum afterburner. Documents obtained by Business Insider on the previously unreported November 2023 incident said that the pilot, a lieutenant whose name was redacted, showed tremendous skill that not only saved his own life but also his $60 million aircraft. The entire incident played out in just under 20 seconds, demanding quick thinking.
Committee vote on Kash Patel's nomination to be FBI director delayed after Democrats object
A Senate Judiciary Committee vote on advancing Kash Patel's nomination to be FBI director was delayed Thursday after Democrats raised objections. The move will require the committee to take a one week hold before voting on Patel's nomination but the delay will likely have no bearing on Patel's ability to ultimately be confirmed. Patel, who has never served as an FBI agent, has become a controversial pick after Democrats questions about his comments that he planned to fire agents and the bureau's leaders as well as his voicing support for Jan. 6 rioters.
'Stranded' NASA astronaut Suni Williams photographed from Earth during record-breaking spacewalk. Can you spot her?
An amateur photographer on Earth has captured an extremely rare photo of "stranded" NASA astronaut Suni Williams floating outside the International Space Station (ISS) as it passed overhead. The image was taken during a recent spacewalk, when Williams broke the record for most non-consective hours spent spacewalking by a female astronaut. Charline Giroud , a biochemist at the University of Oxford in England and astrophotography enthusiast, snapped the striking photo Jan. 30 using a small telescope as the ISS passed over Oxfordshire at an altitude of around 250 miles (410 kilometers). The shoot required extreme precision as the space station was traveling at around 17,500 mph (28,000 km/h). "I was very lucky to capture this event under clear skies with my telescope from my hometown, it was a fantastic moment," Giroud told Spaceweather.com .
The same Boeing passenger plane keeps being diverted after take-off... what's going on?
It was a bad few weeks for one particular Boeing plane, which appears to have been diverted four times in 25 days. An American Airlines 787-8 Dreamliner with the registration code N819AN appeared to repeatedly take off and then changing its direction back to its departure airport throughout January into February. The incident was first pointed out by a user on Bluesky last week who said of the plane “If I'm getting the full picture, this 787 has had an incredibly bad month or so – like not quite like much I've really seen before really. Diversions, aborted take-offs, out of service, etc.” The first incident happened on 7 January. A flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Philadelphia, USA, ended up lasting only one hour and 46 minutes after changing its course and flying back to its departing airport, Amsterdam Schiphol, according to data collected by FlightAware.
Astronomers unsure what caused 'weird explosion' seen by Einstein Probe's X-ray eye
Astronomers are trying to understand a mysterious cosmic explosion that the Einstein Probe spacecraft spotted in April last year. The highly energetic explosion was initially attributed to a burst of gamma rays emitted either by the collision of two neutron stars or from the death of a massive star. Soon, however, the possibility emerged that the unusual explosion, designated EP240408A, could have been the result of a supermassive black hole ripping apart and consuming a star in what is known as a tidal disruption event (TDE). However, EP240408A refused to conform to what is expected of either of these powerful cosmic events, opening up the possibility that what the Einstein Probe actually saw with its X-ray eye was something entirely new!

California crisis: A neighborhood is drifting into the ocean
Destroyed homes and collapsed power lines have peppered a section section of Los Angeles County coastline that is rapidly merging with the ocean, prompting an emergency declaration, a buyout program for property owners and an alarming study from NASA. A new report from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California sheds more light on the situation in the Palos Verdes Peninsula, a region along the Los Angeles County coast that juts into the Pacific Ocean and is home to the affluent Rancho Palos Verdes community. It sits about 30 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. The report found that the region, long understood to be an extremely landslide-prone part of the state, moved by 16 inches toward the ocean during a four-week period last fall, when researchers used radar during aerial flights to measure the movement. That's a rate of about 4 inches every week.
