IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

This group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!

This book is in the LitRPG genre. What is the LitRPG genre? It’s a book that takes place during a table top or video game, essentially. Some movies that you may be familiar with that are close to LitRPG, or early LitRPG, are Tron and Jumanji for example. The Matrix and Ready Player One would be in this genre as well. So if. you enjoyed those movies, you will likely enjoy this book.

LitRPG is a relatively new genre and the rules are still flexible.

So what is Dungeon Crawler Carl? The premise of this books starts similarly to Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, or at least it looks that way when you start reading. An alien race has claimed the Earth as theirs, and Earth failed to contest that with the proper paperwork in the time allotted. But that’s where the similarities stop. I will let this youtuber explain it to you and give his (spoiler free) recommendation, because he does it a lot better than I do.

Goodreads gives it 4.5 stars!

This is the book blurb from Penguin Random House:

”The apocalypse will be televised! Welcome to the first book in the wildly popular and addictive Dungeon Crawler Carl series by Matt Dinniman—now with bonus material exclusive to this print edition.

You know what’s worse than breaking up with your girlfriend? Being stuck with her prize-winning show cat. And you know what’s worse than that? An alien invasion, the destruction of all man-made structures on Earth, and the systematic exploitation of all the survivors for a sadistic intergalactic game show. That’s what.

Join Coast Guard vet Carl and his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut, as they try to survive the end of the world—or just get to the next level—in a video game–like, trap-filled fantasy dungeon. A dungeon that’s actually the set of a reality television show with countless viewers across the galaxy. Exploding goblins. Magical potions. Deadly, drug-dealing llamas. This ain’t your ordinary game show.

Welcome, Crawler. Welcome to the Dungeon. Survival is optional. Keeping the viewers entertained is not.”

Universal has picked it up to create a series. Hopefully they actually do. Rumors have it that it will be animated, which would work very well with this book. So those of you who don’t read may be able to enjoy the series sometime in the (hopefully) near future.

This book is a great escape, it has some good ‘adult ‘ humor, and of course Carl’s catchphrase becomes “Dammit Donut!”, which every cat owner in the world can relate to. This is not an epic fantasy read like Lord of the Rings or the Shannara series. It’s not a book that looks at the social justices of the world like L. E. Modesitt Jr’s Imager series. It’s a fun romp through a game show dungeon where the survival of the world is on the line. Dungeon Crawler Carl is the first of a 7 book series, so if you enjoy it, there will be more to sink your teeth into.
