Wise Words from AOC [1]

No doubt are we living in frightening times. The flurry of executive orders the thing has signed over the past two weeks is incredibly upsetting, and Elon Musk’s mission to hollow out many government departments makes even the scariest horror movie look like “Sesame Street.” Against the backdrop of this real-life horror show, I’ve been worried and stressed out, like many of you here and throughout the rest of the country. Not surprisingly, the vow to leave the country has taken on an urgent tone. But for those of us who can’t leave, we are stuck in a whirlwind of worry, nail-biting, and despair.
However, I have been hearing from a number of people about the “flooding the zone” concept, which authoritarians use to trip up, confuse, and depress the population. In other words, “I can do whatever I want, and you can’t stop me.” That’s what is making so many of us worry. Thankfully, though, the wonderful representative named Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has some wise words for us:
This excellent video that AOC put out just yesterday was a breath of fresh air. Her advice to us? “Breathe.” Pause and breathe for a moment. Choose the action you can take (and her “putting sand in the gears” metaphor is fantastic) to save our country. Most importantly, don’t think you can’t make a difference, even when you have Republicans representing you (as I do). And, she continues, don’t think that because you have Democrats representing you that they will vote “no,” especially on cabinet nominees. No matter who represents you, make noise. Call voters and ask them to support candidates for the special House elections (like I’ve been doing on behalf of Josh Weil) to increase the number of Democrats in the House of Representatives.
Another thing? There are far more of us than there are of them. Most Americans (even Republicans) don’t want what the thing is dishing out to us.
I’m not saying that times aren’t scary or worrying. They really are. But Alexandria, ever the wise, strong, and caring public servant, has given us a modicum of hope. Let’s take her words to heart and “save the country,” as the Fifth Dimension once sang:
