The Value of Just Holding On [1]

Today Josh Marshall at TPM has a blog about Holding On through the time of shock and awe. Here is a bit of what he said:

“Pretty quickly the impact of that shock and disorientation and paralysis wears off. So simply holding on through that first period is a big thing. The balance of powers and levers available start to shift. And in some cases rapidly… The situation still remains grave and with most of the power on one side. But they do become relatively less powerful with each day that passes. Not by much but by some.”

What America has experienced since January 20th is similar to what America experienced when attacked at Pearl Harbor 84 years ago. That was real shock and awe. The forces on our side were asleep, disorganized, weak and unready. Remember what Japanese Admiral Yamamoto said, “I fear we have awakened a sleeping giant.” The initial naval battles after Pearl Harbor were mostly inconclusive, the US won some battles, and lost others. But then came the battle of Midway, and the long slog at Guadalcanal. After that the Japanese were in retreat across the Pacific.

We have survived the onslaught of the last two weeks. We will continue to win some battles and loose others. No doubt about that. Yet now our side is gathering strength and moving to action. Now progressives are joined by ordinary Americans unwilling to tolerate what Trump and Musk have done: now together, we awaken the new sleeping giant. This giant will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.
