It’s Déjà Vu All Over Again [1]

Yesterday, news broke that our own Little Caesar wants to conquer Gaza, kill or evict its residents, and transform it into some fever-dream version of Atlantic City. On the very same day, the administration also offered buyouts to any CIA employees willing to leave. Coincidence?

Every national security professional I know, read, or respect sees this for what it is: insane. Let’s set aside, for a moment, the devastating impact this would have on Gaza’s long-suffering residents or America’s already tattered reputation. Instead, consider the immediate danger this poses to our own national security.

9/11 was, in part, a response to the mere presence of U.S. troops on Saudi soil. Now, imagine the provocation of openly declaring our intent to conquer and forcibly remove an entire Muslim population. You can bet that every terrorist group in the world is already strategizing how to respond—most likely by targeting Trump-owned or branded properties.

This is so glaringly obvious that even the Clown in Chief can’t claim ignorance. Which raises the chilling question: Is that the point?

An infamous proto-MAGA politician once said:

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

We often remind ourselves not to ascribe to malice what can be explained by incompetence. But is it really that hard to believe this administration would manufacture a crisis to tighten its grip on power? Bush 43 got reelected by starting a war over less. Why should we expect better from Trump?
