IAN:Thursday 2/6/2025 Which Sewing Machine For Me? [1]

In the spirit of the Vikings, perhaps I should arrange a burning ship on a lake or river, but that is just my interpretation of a Viking funeral, probably learned from a Bugs Bunny cartoon. I will miss Sven, he was a good machine who took too much abuse sewing denim purses and got little care in return. But, I am moving on and have 2 choices right now. I'll give you a peek below the advert.

As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!

IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

This is the machine I am leaning towards. It is a Baby Lock Accomplish. Price about $900, or about half the price of Sven today. It includes a big extension table that I paid $136 for last year for Sven. They are custom cut per the machine model so no swapping around.

Baby Lock Accomplish

It has a great assortment of feet including a walking foot and a quarter inch foot, both of which are must haves for a quilter. But it only does a straight stitch forward and reverse. No zig zag, no decorative stitches. If you know old sewing machines, it is rather like the Featherweight. Also like a Featherweight, this machine is all metal, parts and body. It is heavy too. It will sew 1500 stitches a minute. (I sew about 10 stitches a minute some times.) It is a solid machine that will allow me to drop the feed dogs and do free motion quilting and it has a decent throat that is higher than most to take those quilts. It should last a good long time with regular maintenance. I mean, some of the Featherweight machines have lasted over 100 years and are still turning out some of the best stitches and seams.

If I buy this one, I will buy it from a local sewing machine shop that my guild does business with. I will get life time classes, any time calls with questions and general support. Their in house tech is good. I went into the shop yesterday and looked at it and one I had seen advertised online. We decided the advertised one was not up to my needs and for an extra $100 I could get a much better one.

My other choice comes as an offer from a guild sister. It is a Janome MC6600 P. It is worth at least what I am willing to pay for the other but she and I have not discussed money. She has looked it up like I have and knows the value range. It is totally computerized with all the extras, too many to list here.

Janome MC6600P

This has an advanced feeding system, tons of speed, and is a great machine. You would not take it on the road though, very heavy. It does not come with life time classes or emergency calls or a tech. It is actually more than I need and that is why I am not leaning towards it more.

Since Sven died, I have been using a tiny Brother and it has done a fine job without my needing anything special. If I buy the Baby Lock, I will get the things I really use except zig zag for applique work, but the Brother has all those stitches even if it doesn’t have the power to free motion a quilt. It can find a home in my sewing room when I don’t need it.

I have not gone to see the Janome at my guild sister’s house yet. I will maybe next week. It is closer to the Viking but I have started thinking that simpler might be better when the options I need are all covered.
