Lutheran Pastor Martin Niemöller originally supported Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party until 1937 when he was arrested and sent to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp for political prisoners because he spoke out against Nazi control over German churches. Niemöller was later transferred to Dachau where he remained until liberated by Allied forces in 1945. He wrote the poem "First They Came" in 1946. This is my adapted version of the Niemöller poem written for today’s times. There is a posting on YouTube by my alter-ego Reeces Pieces. I recommend the children’s picture book Terrible Things: An Allegory of the Holocaust by Eve Bunting with illustrations by Stephen Gammell and an animated video.
First MAGA came for transgender people
And I did not speak out
Because I was not transgender
Then MAGA came for undocumented immigrants
And I did not speak out
Because I was not undocumented
Then MAGA came for same-sex couples
And I did not speak out
Because I was not gay
Then MAGA came for liberals and progressives
And I did not speak out
Because I didn’t identify as a liberal or a progressive
Then MAGA came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me
