Trade War: Still in the Phoney War, Trump Blinks [1]

So Canada and Mexico have agreed to do what they had agreed to do before any of this actually started. Trump of course will call this a Win and it will likely be spun that way. But the real war has started with a rather weak initial volley at China.
Trump believes his own bubble. That 51st state is not only talk he expected a lot more support. Instead he got anger from exactly the same looking crowds he sees at his rallies. Tactically this was a big mistake as he should have at least waited until Friday. He didn’t allow any short term pain to be felt and so no actual relief to cement a victory (of any type) in the public consciousness. Instead he got a weekend news cycle that everyone was already moving past by mid day. He has basically made the threat much weaker. The actual Chinese attack was not only muted but is now obscured in the public mind. The slow knock on effects that is going to have will now be invisible and the slight bump in inflation slower to realize but harder for him to pass off.
I’m going to update this post later as more plays out, but I wanted this out close to events so people can start thinking about all this.
