Welcome back to the Monday Good News Roundup, the time of the week where the GNR Newsroom (myself, Killer300, Bhu, and the good people at the GNR Discord) bring you good news, music, and fun videos to help start your week off right.

And, well, last week was kind of a rough week for me personally. I am getting kicked out of my home at the end of February, and me and my dad need to make other arrangements. We are going to head over Tuesday to the local Department of Social services to see what they can do to help. Hopefully I wont be homeless in a month.

In any case, enough of my problems, lets get on with the good news, but first some music. Take it away Mister Mister with “Is it love”

Protests have erupted across the country over the weekend in response to President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown, which includes mass deportations and sweeping raids targeting illegal immigrants.

People are finally waking up to the shitshow we now find ourselves in, and they are not having it. We’re gonna make Trump suffer inch by agonizing inch to get anything done. Don’t let up, don’t make it easy for him.

New drugs under development against obesity show weight reductions of up to 22 percent of body weight after 48 weeks of treatment.

McGill University has analyzed data from 26 clinical studies confirming the effectiveness of current drugs and showing even better results from new compounds.

The drug retatrutide, which combines three appetite-regulating hormones, shows the best results so far in clinical trials.

First let me preface this by saying there’s nothing wrong with being overweight. I myself am a very heavyset individual, and although I am attempting to lose weight for health reasons (namely high blood pressure and pre diabetes) I would never begrudge anyone who wants to be plus sized. Big is beautiful.

That being said if you want to slim down I’m glad they are producing drugs to make that easier.

Yale researchers have managed to restore basic cellular functions in a pig brain four hours after death using a specially developed perfusion machine.

The technique is now being tested on human brains to develop better treatments for neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

A similar system, OrganEx, has been shown to restore organ functions in entire pig bodies one hour after cardiac arrest.

And have a twofer of amazing medical news. Lets get around to conquering death.

New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin and other Democratic attorneys general said Tuesday they are suing the Trump administration to block its freeze of trillions in federal funding, calling the action unconstitutional and illegal. “The president in this country is powerful. He is not a king,” Platkin said. “He does not get to wake up in the morning or after an afternoon nap and direct his entire government to stop funding critical services that Congress has duly authorized and appropriated that millions and millions of Americans — Republicans, Democrats, independents, children, adults, seniors — depend on for life-saving care.” Platkin and attorneys general from New York, Rhode Island, California, Massachusetts, and Illinois told reporters that President Donald Trump’s Monday night directive was so “deliberately” vague that states were left guessing which projects and services would be impacted.

Last week we struck a major victory against Trump. That fat gasbag stuck his hand in the cookie jar and we collectively told him to take it out and go stand in the corner. This was a big win for us, don’t let anyone tell you different.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday approved a new type of prescription pain medication for adults to treat moderate to severe acute pain. The drug, called Journavx (suzetrigine) and manufactured by biotech company Vertex Pharmaceuticals, is a non-opioid painkiller, which doesn’t have addictive properties, unlike opioids often used for this type of pain.

Lots of good medical news this week. Science is always awesome.

Being a pompous Nazi is apparently not good for business, as the latest Tesla earnings report indicates. For the third time in four quarters, Tesla missed revenue targets, this time by a hefty 5.25%. And that’s not even the worst of it. CEO Elon Musk, the world’s richest person nearly twice over the second-place Jeff Bezos, announced profits of $2.3 billion for the final quarter of 2024, compared to $7.9 billion a year ago. Yet even those two numbers are smoke and mirrors—in 2023, that profit included a one-time tax benefit of $5.9 billion, and last quarter’s numbers include a $600 million profit from bitcoin. Yes, nearly a third of the profit of this supposed car and battery storage company came from something completely unrelated to its core business.

Elon continues to prove that he is an idiot who doesn’t know how to run anything except his mouth. I increasingly look forward to him and Trumps relationship disintegrating.

And some advice on how to get through the next four years from Bluesky (More will be coming later)

And hey, my first Bluesky post on a GNR. Get fucked Elon.

And hey, have another one.

x I swear we’ll never get anywhere by yelling things like “fascism” or “authoritarianism” or “he’s a dictator” or “he’s getting away with it all” or “he’s taking over.” All that does is make Trump look stronger. 100% of our messaging should be about how weak and inept he is. — Palmer Report (@palmerreport.com) 2025-01-31T23:56:00.854Z

This week, President Trump signed dozens of executive orders affecting federal jobs, spending, and federally funded programs. The rapid-fire changes have left many Americans with questions, prompting expressions of overwhelm on social media. This cycle of exhaustion and sense of media burnout prompted by the news cycle is nothing new. An American Psychological Association survey found 77% of U.S. adults said the future of our nation was a significant source of stress in their lives. For those struggling to stay informed while preserving their well-being, a cross-section of thought leaders spanning activism, academia, and self-care offered their best strategies for resisting burnout and navigating today’s news cycle.

I think everyone could read this, especially on this site.

Donald Trump doesn't know it yet, but Republicans have already lost the country. On Tuesday night, January 28, 2025, two special elections showed dramatic, pro-Democratic shifts compared to the results of November 5, 2024. In Minnesota, the special election for Senate District 60 shifted toward Democrats by 13 percentage points. In a district Kamala Harris won by 69 points (83%-14%) in November, the Democratic candidate prevailed on Tuesday by 82 points, or 91%-9%. More dramatically, in the special election for Iowa's 35th Senate district, the Democratic candidate won 52%-48% in a district that Donald Trump won 60%-39%. This shift of 25 points allowed Democrat Mike Zimmer, a former public school principal, to flip a deep red seat blue.

Would have been nice to have this kind of voting in November, but hey, you get knocked down, you get back up again right? You only lose if you stay down.

Now for another musical interlude. Haunted by Diamante

WASHINGTON, Jan 17 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden's administration has protected about 84%, or $96.7 billion in clean energy grants created by its signature climate law from any clawback by the next administration, a White House official said on Friday. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT The 84% of the grants from the Inflation Reduction Act have been "obligated", meaning contracts have been signed between U.S. agencies and recipients. The outgoing administration hopes this will help to continue the deployment of clean energy even after Monday's inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump , a climate change skeptic who has pledged to rescind all unspent IRA funds.

I’m sure Trump would love nothing more than to tear down everything Biden managed to do during his four years. Unfortunately for him, Biden didn’t make it easy for him. Biden’s legacy will live on.

At first blush, the Trump administration’s strategy to quell resistance through sheer overwhelm seems to be working. (Yes, the all-at-once avalanche of executive orders was a strategy, two advisors of President Trump told The Atlantic.) Until the debacle over pausing federal aid funding this week, pushback from the political arena has been muted, and there have been no protests near the scale of the ones that occurred when Trump was first elected in 2016. The courts are another matter. A blitz of lawsuits have trailed Trump’s executive orders and other actions taken by his administration. In some instances, judges have already issued checks against them. Any president will make changes that people will not agree with, but some of Trump’s maneuvers are legally questionable, and represent a coordinated power grab for the executive branch. Today, I want to highlight the swift response to bring those under judicial review.

Trump is deliberately trying to exhaust us, don’t fall for it. Take each threat one at a time, don’t let him set the pace of the fight.

In collaboration with the White House, Republican leaders in the Florida Legislature revamped and approved a bill on Tuesday that seeks tougher penalties on undocumented immigrants that commit crimes — and removes much of the governor’s authority over immigration, an issue that Ron DeSantis has made a cornerstone of his legacy in Florida. The legislation — nicknamed the TRUMP Act — was amended to include several new provisions that House Speaker Daniel Perez and Senate President Ben Albritton said were suggested by the Trump administration. They said the changes will align the state’s immigration laws to the new changes ushered in by President Donald Trump to identify and deport scores of people who are in the country illegally.

I know memories of the election are bittersweet and it all ended on a really sour note, but at least we can all agree as bad as that election ended for us, at least we aren’t this fucking guy.

Newsweek has contacted the White House and X, the social media platform owned by Musk, formerly known as Twitter, for comment via email. There have been concerns about how much influence Musk wields over Trump and within the administration. He apparently played a key role in Trump loyalist Vivek Ramaswamy stepping away from co-leading the Department of Government Efficiency, according to Politico. But any fallout between Musk and figures of the MAGA movement risks straining his relationship with the president.

I would say yes, Elon could indeed tear MAGA apart, since Trump no longer feels the need to even pretend loyalty to his base now that he’s on his last term, and he’s sucking up to a rich asshole who most of his voters probably hate.

A group of Quaker congregations is suing the Department of Homeland Security for changing a policy that prevented Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents from carrying out operations in so-called “sensitive locations” such as houses of worship, playgrounds, schools and hospitals without approval from supervisors.

Quakers don’t mess around when it comes to human rights. You may also recall they were among the first on board with Abolition. Good bunch of people them Quakers. Damn fine oatmeal too.

his is not fatalistic, it is the reality of our history — not just as a nation, but as a species. Since our evolution as a species, we have existed in an endless fight between those who “have” and those who do not “have.” Whether it’s access to a bone club and a fire or the wealth of billions of dollars, humanity has always struggled to fight against the existentially lethal presence of one sin: Greed. Greed won the 2025 election, but anyone who thinks our side is down and out is not only gravely mistaken but has also learned nothing from the lessons of history. People have whined, moaned, and cried in terror, “THERE’S NO OPPOSITION!!!! NO ONE IS RESISTING!!!!” Please, do tell me where you are getting this information? CNN, ABC, the New York Times perhaps? The same corporate media outlets that orchestrated Trump’s return to the Presidency? Resistance is occurring, and in many ways more forcefully than it did when Trump was President in 2016. Forget about the establishment wing of the DNC for one moment, we all know about their shortcomings and back stabbings — many of them being supported and paid off by the same billionaires that have supported the RNC. I am talking about the rest of the nation as a whole — the rest of us. Too many of us get preoccupied and paralyzed with fear. We are shown MAGA death-cultists marching down streets. We shown militias all over the place. We see Trump doing whatever the hell he wants. What few seem to consider, however, is that this is exactly the point. We are meant to see all of this — we are meant to see this “show of strength” and be made exhausted. Fewer still seem to take into account that the legacy media has been expressly restructured to be a propaganda arm for the billionaire oligarchy that Trump represents. No kidding it looks like there’s no resistance — it is being hidden from your very eyes!

Look, I get it, things are scary right now. It sucks, it really does, but we’ve already done this song and dance once before. We already know what to expect from Trump, we’re ready for him this time. Just four more years and he’s gone for good. We can do this.

As wildfires continue to burn across Los Angeles County, displacing tens of thousands of families and forcing many into temporary housing, two mothers have launched a grassroots project to reunite displaced children with their beloved stuffed toys and blankets. Sisters-in-law Randi Jaffe and Jenny Jaffe created the LA Lost Stuffy Project , which raises funds to buy new versions of stuffed toys and blankets lost in the fires. Randi Jaffe told "Good Morning America" she and her sister-in-law wanted to come up with a way to help families impacted by the fires, even though they live across the country in New Jersey and New York respectively. She said the idea for LA Lost Stuffy Project came to her because as a child life specialist and a mom of two, she knows firsthand how important comfort items can be for kids.

Okay all I can say to this is D’awwww.

I had a difficult time sleeping—for me, at least—as I tossed and turned for about 30 to 40 minutes on Wednesday and Thursday night this past week. You might think this was because I was having a hard time adjusting to the reality of the new administration in Washington, D.C., but that actually wasn't it. I turned 51 on Thursday. That same day, my only child auditioned for the local performing arts high school, something which he had been building up to for almost two years. What I was having a difficult time with on both nights was not contemporary politics or the shock of the news cycle, but the passage of time itself. I thought about friends I have fallen out of touch with; family activities that you can only do when your kid is young; all the good times my kid has had at his current school and the friends he has made; days lost to illness, anger or procrastination; and all the other things one thinks of when they are having difficulty dealing with the fleeting nature of life. One positive side effect of this tossing and turning is that it also helped give me some perspective on just how very temporary our current Trumpian moment actually is. In fact, I think there are many things about where we are at this moment in time that will make it unusually temporary and fleeting, more so than the start of other presidential terms. While that may be hard to process or accept during these difficult early days, I think I can make a good case for it. Here are five ways that our current, very Trumpian moment will prove to be fleeting:

Trump sucks, but he will not be around forever. And when he cuts out, what will the GOP be left with? Nothing.

In any case, that’s enough stories, Its Pokemon time!

Now its time for the cute corner.

Last but not least, we have a feature I haven’t really been covering (Since we haven’t had a lot of opportunities for it yet) but now its time to bring it back: the Organizing spotlight!

Want to stick it to Trump? Want to resist but don’t know where to start? We got you covered, here are some organizations you can donate time or money to, or some events taking place that can use your help. Get out there and show them what we’re made of.

You do what you can

Declassified CIA guide to sabotaging fascism

Donate to help Democrats retake the house

Calling out to Organizers

Courage is contagious, its time to fight back

That does it for this week. Stay strong, stay positive, and I’ll be back next week.
