US fentanyl deaths decreasing: the metric to stop the trade war has been met [1]

Nobody knows what Canada and Mexico would need to do stop the trade war, but supposedly the POTUS wants a reduction in deaths from fentanyl (of which a minuscule amount comes through Canada).

So then, great! In 1 month the DEA will be able to say that less dangerous pills are entering the US and that fewer Americans are dying, which will be true because it was already true a couple of months ago

According to the CDC, the U.S. saw a 14.5% decrease in overdose deaths from June 2023 through June 2024. Also, for first time since 2021, DEA has seen a decrease in the potency of fentanyl pills — Nov 15, 2024, www.dea.gov/...

Here’s a headline from just over a month ago:

Drug overdose deaths in the United States fell 17% between July 2023 and July 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a new report released Wednesday.

Did you notice that monthly decline there, from a 14.5% decrease to a 17% decrease? In one month.

who would of thought? Public health approaches that include harm reduction help save lives (and include naloxone to reverse overdoses and buprenorphine access for medication assisted treatment). A lot more progress can be made but it’s going to be real damn easy for the current people in charge to claim a victory while not actually doing the hard work of helping people. Instead we’re getting a trade war with our closest neighbors that has more to do with posturing and might just cost us normal people thousands of dollars a year.
