Apple Watch

Though I was already a computer programmer in 1961, I was slow to adapt to the personal computer renaissance after Apple. At the urging of a friend I purchased my first desktop, which was actually assembled by a local guy. It worked for a while, but eventually the return policy was abrogated when that guy went to jail. Then I got a Dell desktop, but mostly just used it to read the news. I remember visiting up in Washington where I first heard of laptops, used as a verb: “I laptopped on my commute.”

I saw my first laptop at work, used by a guy doing maintenance on our postal sorting machines (incidentally, the same machines that DeJoy destroyed). I bought one, and used it till I got a MacBook Air. I’m on my second one of those.

Did I need a cellphone? It was brillig at a Netroots that convinced me that I needed one. “Look, here’s a map on my phone showing an Apple store right across the street. You should go buy one.” I did eventually and used it, though I was slow to embrace it, and often wouldn’t turn it on for days. It was a great camera, however.

When I was in the ER for atrial fibrillation the doctor said “You should get an Apple watch, to monitor your vital signs.” On my Kaiser visits I noticed most of the nurses wore them, as did a number of my acquaintances. After quite a bit of research, I bought one yesterday. A bit behind the curve, since they were introduced 10 years ago. A steep learning curve at first, and one must also have a cellphone, which I think has to be an Apple phone.

The thing is amazing, as you folks who have one know. It will take a long time to discover all the capabilities. With some research I determined you can use it….as a watch! But the main reason for purchase, the heartbeat monitor, works perfectly. Sort of LOL, but while I was reading on DKos this afternoon about the total takeover of our government, suddenly I heard a chime from the watch and a message displayed that my heart rate was dangerously high. I sat on the couch for a while to calm down, though the coup continues as we speak.

Do you have a smart watch? Is it something you would recommend? What is the coolest thing yours can do? From what I’ve read, mine can remember where I parked my car. This I gotta see.
