The freaking BACK PAGE of this morning’s New York Times (p. 20):
More Than a Dozen Prosecutors at Washington U.S. Attorney’s Office Are Dismissed
Trump is firing every attorney involved in prosecuting him for his many crimes. He’s purging every FBI agent who investigated him when he committed treason by stealing Top Secret government documents. He’s wantonly trashing one of the most vital parts of our democracy: a free and independent Department of Justice, protecting the American public from crooks, thieves, crazies, and malefactors. Now the Department of Justice will be on a mission to punish anyone who crosses Trump. OUR Department of Justice is now HIS Department of Petty Retribution.
Isn’t this kind of a, you know, big deal? The front page, above the fold story is “Behind Spending Chaos, a Problem Dogging Both Parties” (Both Parties! Oh Boy! The stuff about Trump taking a blowtorch to our democracy? Shove it on the back page where he may not see it!)
I’m old enough to remember when Elliot Richardson, Attorney General in the Nixon Administration (!), encouraged his prosecutors to go after Vice President Spiro Agnew for taking bribe money from contractors. Without Richardson’s courage, the thuggish grifter Agnew would have become President, god help us, after Nixon resigned. (For the full story, listen to Rachel Maddow’s brilliant podcast “Bagman.”)
The Capitol is on fire. The Trumies are taking a bead on the Statue of Liberty with head-seeking missiles. They are counting on people to be so overwhelmed, discouraged, and cynical that they won’t even care they’ll have no protection as the Trumpies complete their “Bust Out” of the federal government, walking away with billions in tax breaks while people lose their Medicare/Medicaid coverage and their kids lose their school lunch programs. (That’s if their kids don’t die of Measles thanks to RFK Jr.)
George Orwell said, “To see what is in front of one’s nose is a constant struggle.” When the Trump Show Trials begin, expect the New York Times to run summaries on page 17, under the results of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
