The Daily Bucket. Out under the storm. Photos in the wet. [1]

In change to my normal “adjusting” of my photographs, meaning I take my .jpg file for each image and use an editing program on it to adjust brightness, contrast, shadow, sharpness, and saturation, I’ve left nearly all of yesterday’s photographs as they came out of the camera, with a couple of exceptions.

It was just before 9:00 a.m. when I went outside for a bike ride and the rain had just started, with little pitty-patters. By the time I got back home in about an hour it was fairly coming down.

Ah. That title image. Red-shouldered Hawk, not more than five minutes after leaving the house. Up on a telephone cable pole just by the bicycle path. Here’s the standard image:

[I notice there’s been a change in the menu for embedding and I can’t embed images like I was able to previously and have them display in full.]

Here’s how the day pretty much looked. Rain clouds closed down in over American Valley, obscuring the surrounding mountain ranges.

Looking north by north-east.

Ducks out in the shallow.

Mallard

Looking west.

I found this ice formation in the ditch alongside the bike path interesting. All the water has drained away beneath it, leaving a shelf supported by its own tension. It’s sitting about six inches off the ground at the right edge, but my camera doesn’t capture the 3-D quality.

This might show it a little better.

It was another mile of riding before I got out to the trees by the airport. Some birds, not many, but this Northern Flicker was obliging.

Canada Goose on the active runway, ready for takeoff.

What’s my vector, Victor?

Spanish Creek runs adjacent to the airport. This is one of the best swimming holes on the river. Look carefully and you can see the rain drop ripples on the water surface. It was raining moderately now.

Just across from the swimming hole, this magnificent young Red-tailed Hawk flew up into a pine tree across the creek from me. I got this one good image and it flew away.

On over to Dellinger’s Pond for a look-see; the ice is returning to liquid water.

Only a couple of ducks out on the pond, but this photo shows how steady the rain was now coming down.

And if a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, then this one bird in the bush means I have half a bird in the hand?

Now going on 7:30 a.m. this first day of February, 2025. It’s raining moderately outside, and the temperature out my front door is 43of.

Now it’s your turn. What’s up in your world, seasonal and nature-wise?
