Good morning, Newdists. What a horrible week this has been and I fear more unravelling and unmaking is on the way. I’m afraid.

I am on BlueSky and looking around and exploring.

Onward —

Birds, we have birds —

x 🐦One of the most crazy things that some of us, who live in the Pacific Northwest get to see every year - Migratory Snow geese that arrive by the thousands and stay in the Skagit Valley all winter. I think this time, I managed to capture a video that somewhat does a decent job of… pic.twitter.com/bXxpxDf4c2 — Beauty of music and nature 🌺🌺 (@Axaxia88) January 28, 2025

x Hoooo whooo made that sound? This owl doesn't hoot like many other members of its family, this is the Eastern screech owl. Their call sounds like a high-pitched descending trill or whinny. Have you ever heard their call? Did it give you the willies?

x Throwback Thursday!

Several years ago, Ace the American kestrel wowed the internet with his "tiny falcon on tiny glove" routine. Ace is still around impressing people with just how small he is at only 110 grams. American kestrels are the smallest falcon species in North America. pic.twitter.com/itSqocdxML — World Bird Sanctuary (@WBSSTL) January 30, 2025

If you do need to travel in the preserve, be careful! We have slush and ice on the roads at lower elevations, and drifting snow over a foot deep at higher elevations. pic.twitter.com/dbKQm8sNqu — Mojave National Preserve (@MojaveNPS) January 27, 2025

Imagine, a handful of Fairywrens…

x I used to catch fairywrens for a living and these guys were frequent bycatch. They usually hit the net in bunches. 😳

x I had a request for some kookaburra therapy.

I haven't taken any photos of kookaburras for a while but here's one from 2018 at my local suburban creek. I would enjoy going down there to watch this pair tend their nest hollow. The big old gum tree stands in water so nice and safe. pic.twitter.com/5zk1qGDV2V — Sandy Horne (@SandyHorne61) January 31, 2025

Newdists, please grab a cuppa and join us in the thread.
