"The Dog that Didn't Bark": A Condemnation of America's News Media [1]

Today, in the NORTHERN VIRGINIA DAILY, there has run a piece titled “Plenty of Blame to Go Around.” The “Blame” in question is for the extraordinary development that Donald Trump — long at war against the Rule of Law in America — has emerged triumphant.
(Before that piece ran in the newspapers, I published it here under the title, “Q: How Did Trump Defeat the Rule of Law? A: Widespread Brokenness in the American Body Politic.”)
The thrust of that piece, as that DK title implied, was that
For Trump’s victory over the Rule of Law exposes a systemic deterioration of the many “organs” of the American body politic.
And I proceeded to go through the contributions of both parties, and both liberal and conservative parts of the American public, plus today’s blatantly partisan Supreme Court that sided with the criminal over the Rule of Law.
To that piece, I added this in the comments section where that piece appears online. I thought it would be appropriate to share this additional bit here:
*****************************
There's one part of the American body politic that I did NOT include here-- but only because it would have made the piece too long to include it.
That's the NEWS MEDIA. A lot can be said, and a lot has been said, about the failure of the media to cover Trump appropriately. Now, the owners of the media have shown themselves so craven in the face of a mighty and vengeful President Trump that many media organizations are sucking up to Trump to protect themselves from his wrath.
But before there was that fear, there were other factors. One of them was that Trump was good for ratings, so the media coverage that failed the nation was good for generating money for the corporate media organizations.
But there's another aspect of it, I think, which I called attention to before Trump had even entered the political arena. As the force of fascism has been gathering momentum and power over the past generation, most of those in the news media simply did not understand what was happening right before their eyes.
In 2014, after a decade of writing my warnings on my own website -- NoneSoBlind.org -- I wrote a piece titled, "America's Compromised Immune System:The American Press as the Dog that Didn't Bark." ("The dog that didn't bark" is a reference to a famous Sherlock Holmes story/)
Here's the text of that 2014 entry:
