Russian Losses Over Past 13 Months [1]

In my previous diary on this subject, I took a look at the evolution of Russia’s losses by Quarter in Ukraine during the course of their now nearly 3-year long “Special Military Operation” that was supposed to be concluded in just 3 days (or maybe 3 weeks). In this first in a series of monthly updates, I’ll be using the same methodology to look at how those average daily losses continue to accumulate on a monthly basis.

The first thing to note is that while Russian daily troop losses (now including a substantial fraction of North Koreans) eased off slightly in January from December’s thus far all-time peak (1550 vs 1585), they are still almost double what they were in January of 2024 as the meat assaults show little sign of letting up, despite the winter weather.

Among equipment losses, there was a notable uptick in the artillery category for January — either the Russians are scraping the bottom of their mothballed reserves to try and sustain their current assaults, or these are increasingly NK pieces being targeted. Likewise, despite a significant decline in both UAV and noncombat vehicle losses in December, they both reached new all-time highs in January.
