Kitchen Table Kibitzing, Jan. 31, 2025: Light a Candle for the Souls in the River [1]

Years ago, in the distant land that was the 1980s, I was a young paralegal in Washington, DC. I remember the night when a Florida Air flight went into the icy drink upon take-off. It happened about the time that people got off work, in the dark of winter. I caught my bus home but traffic was so snarled that it took forever to inch up Massachusetts Avenue toward the National Cathedral. I was living in a tiny studio apartment across the street from the Cathedral, high enough up to see the lights of the rescue crews working on the accident once I got home. It was a crap appartment but it did have a view.
I also remember how nice people were to each other that bitter night. People on the bus were so patient and there wasn’t a cross word. There was shock but no mean spirit at all.
This was when that airport was just National Airport, not yet named after the man who fired the aircraft controllers for striking for better safety methods. Remember that?
Anyway, the accident yesterday is much on my mind. In my job in DC, I flew in and out of that airport a lot, so, so many times. Even through the distance of time, the place is very familiar. My heart goes out to those who mourn the lost, the souls in the river, and the people working to sort out the wreckage and find out what happened.
