World Chess Championship 1978
During the 1972 match in Reykjavik, an Australian, living in South Africa, said he had such a gift for telepathy that he could beat Spassky and Fischer simultaneously! It made headlines for a few days. I have forgotten his name, but I would like to see a chess match between him and Mr. Zoukhar!
GAME EIGHT
3rd August
Dr Zoukhar moved from the second row to the fifth, Karpov refused to shake hands, but an American journalist wrote about a boring match: too much rain and no Bobby Fischer! It must be a good guess that neither he nor his readers know much about chess. But rain is something most of us know. I am tempted to add that some of the best games in chess history have been played under such weather conditions. Rain is much better for chess than hot sunny days.
Maybe you are even interested in the game? It is a good game, by Karpov, and for the public. The public loves sharp attacks, and rightly so.
The game began with the Open Ruy and an unnatural tenth move by Korchnoi. Then a sharp pawn sacrifice by Karpov. After move twelve Tal told a journalist he would prefer to play White — so would most of us, after move 18 everybody. The black king remained in the centre and every woodpusher can enjoy asking: “why did he never castle?”
