Schadenfreude [1]

I get it. It’s been a tough few months, and there’s a certain satisfaction in watching Trump’s supporters feel betrayed when he does exactly what he said he would do. Their pain seems to validate everything we warned about—the inevitable consequences of electing a racist con man. It’s tempting to bask in the feeling of being right, to look down on those whose lives are now being upended.
But I’m not interested in being right. I’m interested in defeating Donald Trump and his enablers. In my view, Trump has supporters, who vote for him, and contributors, who fund him. When forced to choose, he will always side with his contributors—whether on tax policy, H-1B visas, or cutting entitlements—at the expense of his supporters. That divide is our opportunity. To defeat Trump and the Republican Party, we don’t need to win his voters over—we just need to change how they feel about him. If enough of them stay home on Election Day, we win.
So take whatever time you need to process the moment, then get back to work. Our job is not to gloat or deepen their resentment—it’s to help them see reality and make better choices. Smug condescension only fuels the narrative that keeps them in Trump’s grip.
