A Republic if You Can Keep It (Part 1)
At the Close of the Constitutional Convention in1787, Benjamin Franklin was asked, ‘Well Doctor, what kind of government do we have, a Monarchy, or a Republic?”
Dr. Franklin responded, “A Republic if you can keep it.”
Dr. Franklin was informing a citizen, a citizen just like you and me that it was our responsibility to remain vigilant, that it was up to us, not our elected leaders to maintain our Republic.
Dr. Franklin went further in explaining this to the three representatives who were opposed to the Constitution. Referring to the Constitution he stated: “that this is likely to be well administered for a course of years, and can only end in despotism, as other forms have done before it, when the people shall become so corrupted as to need despotic government.”
The question before us today is: Have we reached that moment of despotism?
J.D. Vance believes our government is so corrupt, we are that point. “The collapse of the country is inevitable” (J.D.Vance, 2021).
Curtis Yarvin also believes it’s time to change our government. But who cares what Curtis Yarvin thinks?
Answer: J.D. Vance, Russell Vought, and Donald Trump.
Our Republic is now under threat; not from a foreign enemy with whom could battle militarily, but from an enemy within. An enemy we can only battle with the “Thought Police.” And you and I, average citizens, are the “Thought Police.”
Curtis Yarvin has the right to say and publish his thoughts. “It’s not even that democracy is bad; it’s just that it’s very weak. (Yarvin, 2025).” Vance piles on. He states his advice to Trump would be to “Fire every single mid-level bureaucrat” (J.D. Vance 2021). This is what Trump tried to do this week.
It did not go over well. Ordinary citizens like you and me objected to it. Our objections forced President Trump to rescind his illegal freeze on spending. The freeze would have caused our local federally funded health centers to close. It took away treatment for Veterans contemplating suicide. Our activism saved lives and will save our country.
This was week one of President Trump’s four-year term in office. We are in an old-fashioned heavyweight title fight. It will last four years. Our vigilance, our activism is required.
