As a retired journo (dead tree and recycled electron flavors) I’d encourage anyone who’s even slightly interested in facts and the press to check this out and be involved in state-level legislative efforts to get behind the scenes. Yes, now more than ever, since “Something or Other Dies in Darkness.”

Dear colleagues,

Today we launched a free tool we call Secrecy Tracker that allows anyone to monitor legislation regarding public records and open meetings in any state, the District of Columbia, and Congress, going back to 2011.

The unique element of this tool is that it employs machine learning to go beyond keyword searches, avoiding false positives and capturing legislation that may be on target but not including keywords of interest. Also, it allows one to look over time and across the entire country. Also, we have spent time honing the model, and will continue to do so.

We encourage you to check it out and let us know if we are missing key bills regarding freedom of information. We want to thank our partner, Karen Suhaka, founder of BillTrack50, who provides the data, as well as Billy O’Keefe, who designed the website.

Cheers!
