“I Dare You to Say Nazi” [1]

A few days ago, Scott Jennings (a Republican and CNN contributor) challenged Catherine Rampell of the Washington Post to call Republicans Nazis. The conversation was initiated in response to Elon Musk’s gesture, where he appeared to mimic the Nazi Zieg Heil salute. Jennings—carrying water for Trump and the GOP postured that Musk’s gesture is much ado about nothing. In response, Rampell asked Jennings to repeat the move on national TV. All of which Jennings summed up with the words, “This salute trutherism is outrageous.” As for Rampell, she did what most of the traditional press is doing now, chickening out.
Jennings, after saying Rampell’s angst over the Musk salute was “ridiculous” in a pique of anger, asked the panel and Rampell to “say Republicans are Nazis, go ahead say it,” he demanded. Of course, the juvenile response from Scott Jennings is what is to be expected from today’s GOP. The bowing and scraping in fear of crossing Mr. Trump is also expected. What disappointed me was Rampell; whether it was out of fear of losing her job or journalistic integrity, she did not say the Republicans are Nazis, and here is why. Not unlike Hitler, he is systematically destroying the reputation of science, education, and the press. Controlling the courts and removing government oversight, in this case, the Inspector Generals.
In a matter of days, Trump violated the Constitution. He invaded the sovereignty of another country by sending military flights with undocumented aliens to Colombia without the permission of Colombian President Gustavo Petro. Petro sent Colombian planes to solve the standoff, a process that Petro said ensured they were treated “with dignity.” Yesterday, Trump threatened the government workforce, having them choose to accept a “deferred resignation.” This is just one of President Trump's moves to create and bend the government to his will, unopposed. The Supreme Court has fallen, and the Department of Defense, therein, the country’s safety, is now headed by a leadership neophyte whose claim to fame is sitting on a TV set couch with other Fox News hosts.
Mr. Trump has bombarded the country with a flurry of Executive Orders meant to keep us staring at the distraction while his sleight of hand plunges America into fascism. His outrageousness is only matched by his gleeful willingness to make cruelty the point.
In the flurry, there has been no word about what conservatives deemed the necessity of choosing Trump over Harris: inflation. Meanwhile, Trump is busy making noises about making Canada the Poland of Germany’s World War II campaign, claiming it as the 51st state or wanting to rename the Gulf of Mexico. The media is on its heels, and it will continue staring into its empty hat unless it scrapes up the courage to call Trump a liar when needed and a fascist where warranted. Trump lied about the water for fires in California, saying he sent the military to ensure water was being pumped into Los Angeles. Of course, it took a day to debunk the lie. In a post on X, the California Department of Water Resources said that the “military did not enter California. The federal government restarted federal water pumps after they were offline for maintenance for three days,” the agency posted. “State water supplies in Southern California remain plentiful.”
Article titles, such as the one from which the quote above was taken, generally start with a headline Trump claims or suggests. Playing the Trump game only leads to misinformation, confusion, and disinformation, leaving us all in a tizzy of misidentified lies. Listen to former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich below:
