An Open Letter to Senator Thom Tillis

Congratulations on the 15 minutes of fame showered upon you this past Friday evening! The news reporters were breathlessly awaiting the start of the Senate vote to confirm Pete Hegseth for Secretary of Defense. And whose name graced their lips every 90 seconds? Yours! Our very own illustrious senior Republican Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina.

So why was there so much drama? Aah. . . draw nigh, my friends. It seems that two Republican senators, Collins and Murkowski, had resolutely stated they would vote “No” on Pete Hegseth. A third “No” vote would result in a tie breakable by the VP, and a fourth “No” vote would fail the nomination, keeping the hopes of liberal western democracy alive. McConnell hadn’t staked out a position, and he wasn’t talking.

The clock turned to 8:57 pm and the roll call started—a process so confusing that the high-powered pundits with expert staff members had little idea of the vote. But the reporters told us that you—Senator Tillis—had “concerns” and “questions.” Oh . . .how many times the hopes of the civilized world rested on the “concerns” of Republican senators. But, not just “concerns” it was reported, you had “questions”.

And you, dear Senator, had done your due diligence. You had taken your questions directly to Pete Hegseth. We can only surmise, but surely you asked about that little drinking problem. You probably asked if it were true that Pete had showed up at morning meetings visibly intoxicated. Perhaps you asked about his statement that he would stop drinking if he became the Secretary of Defense.

The petty details about Pete’s treatment of women, his opposition to women in the military, his previous two administrative failures, his lack of experience were all issues occupying the headlines for weeks. Apparently Pete had gonzo answers to all these “concerns” because some time after 9 pm, it was reported that you, Senator Tillis, were voting “Yes.”

Wow! Congratulations, Senator! The eyes of the nation were upon you! Let’s be honest, the eyes of the world. You looked into the soul of Pete Hegseth and saw the huge success that he can be! You single-handedly could have stopped the nomination, but au contraire—you saw the man Pete can be. I imagine you and Pete, arms around each other’s shoulders, striding off into the sunset! Bro’s! Comrades in arms!

So, Senator Tillis, Pete is your guy. From now until November 3, 2026, you and Pete are irrefutably linked. When Pete is a huge success, you will float effortlessly to re-election. When the headlines shout “Hegseth Tames Pentagon Budget” or “Hegseth Announces Enlistment Goals Exceeded”, his success will be your success. From now until Nov. 3, 2026, it’s going to be “Pete and Thom” and “Thom and Pete.”

Why worry about re-election in 2026? After your landslide victory in 2020 of almost 2%, with Pete being the wind beneath your wings, you surely have no worries in good ole red North Carolina! There is one small issue; I have it on good authority that unlike 2020, the Democrats are NOT going to nominate a candidate who is having an extramarital affair. It seems almost quaint for voters to be concerned about issues like that! Another small thing: North Carolina’s Democratic governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, and superintendent of schools won statewide. Don’t sweat it, Bro, you have Pete on your side!

It's not just Pete, but in an excess of blessings, you have Trump firmly in your corner. Trump who has spent the first 2 weeks of his administration scaring the living &^$%# out of people. Need Section 8 to pay the rent? Gone! Depend on Medicaid for your medicine? Gone! Need the federal funds to meet payroll? Too bad! Don’t you know Trump is enjoying this! Doubled over laughing, sitting in his golf cart grinning widely, planning the next prank on the American people.

Wasn’t it so kind of Trump to visit western North Carolina devastated by last fall’s Hurricane Helene? Western NC is a sea of red on the voting maps—apologies to Buncombe and Watauga counties. They are undoubtedly thrilled to hear that Trump wants to delete FEMA. FEMA! SCHMEMA! Who needs them? Who needs tons of supplies strategically pre-positioned around 30 counties in some of the most rugged terrain east of the Mississippi? Who needs the army to come in? Who needs anybody’s help to cross the raging river? Surely the volunteers at the local Methodist Church can manage these problems.

Senator Tillis, you are riding high this week! You picked your man, Pete. You saw his hidden potential. Bro’s! Buddies! Walking arm-in-arm off into the sunset of unrivaled success. But, Senator, just a word here. . . Pete drinks.
