NGC 628 (aka M74 and Phantom Galaxy) is a spiral galaxy 32 million light years away, in the constellation Pisces. It hosts about 100 billion stars.

The blue area core contains older stars. Spiny spiral arms made of stars, gas, and dust extend to the edges. Scattered across the image are younger stars seen in blue and orange.

IC 348 is a star-forming region in the constellation Perseus, ~1,000 light years away. The star cluster is young, only about 5 million years old.

Astronomers discovered 3 free-floating brown dwarfs, objects too small to be stars but larger than most planets. The 3 brown dwarfs are less than 8 times the mass of Jupiter, which are circled in the image and shown in the detailed pullouts at right. The smallest has just 3 to 4 times the mass of Jupiter.

Now let’s look deep into today’s puzzle composed in 1879 by Austrian Chess composer and chemist Robert Braune (1845-1924)
