Between 30% and 50% of workers in the meatpacking industry are undocumented. In California, approximately 400,000 farmworkers produce about one-third of the nation’s vegetables and nearly three-quarters of its fruits and nuts. According to the Community and Labor Center at the University of California-Merced, three out of four of those workers are undocumented. The impact of Trump’s deportation policies on harvesting and packaging operations—both nationwide and especially in California—is already becoming evident.

These consequences, however, seem irrelevant to our new leader. The prospect of people paying significantly more for food—or even going without—appears meaningless to him as long as he can pursue his fundamentally racist agenda. We need to understand that, except for his wealthy contributors, he sees us as mere subjects. People matter to him only insofar as they serve his interests, so the fact that his policies will harm even his own supporters is immaterial—for now.

At this moment, many of his supporters are still basking in the afterglow of his victory. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for them to realize that Trump will protect his contributors but sacrifice his supporters along with the rest of us.
