Why We Keep Losing [1]

A proposed bill (SB25-003) in Colorado would ban the sale or transfer of all rifles that have removable clips. This is another attempt at an assault weapons ban here in Colorado and its one of the reasons why democrats will continue to lose elections.
3% of all gun deaths are caused by rifles. So from a logical standpoint to spend energy and political capital on banning weapons that are responsible for less than 3% of the problem makes no sense.
If this bill were to pass, it would do nothing to stop gun deaths, but it would piss off moderate voters. So you appease voters that you already have and lose moderate voters, all the while accomplishing nothing. Its this kind of thinking that has gotten us to where we are.
Personally, I think its ridiculous that we can own assault rifles, but that horse has left the barn. There are half a billion guns in this country, you can’t un-ring that bell.
Of course the solutions to gun violence are complicated and have to do with complex socioeconomic issues as well as gun laws. But at this point in time, our politics demand that Democrats do a better job of appealing to rural and moderate voters by working on issues they care about, healthcare, the wage gap, cost of living.
There are so many issues out there that would align democrats with blue collar voters, this isn’t one of them.
