Very bad words were said when I just read this, and don’t look away because of the source because there are still some good reporters there regardless of the owner…
Trump officials issue quotas to ICE officers to ramp up arrests - The Washington Post
It is clear however that this is coming straight from the Donald who “has long had little patience for explanations of why his goals are not realistic.”
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have been directed by Trump officials to aggressively ramp up the number of people they arrest, from a few hundred per day to at least 1,200 to 1,500, because the president has been disappointed with the results of his mass deportation campaign so far, according to four people with knowledge of the briefings. The quotas were outlined Saturday in a call with senior ICE officials, who were told that each of the agency’s field offices should make 75 arrests per day and managers would be held accountable for missing those targets. …. The orders significantly increase the chance that officers will engage in more indiscriminate enforcement tactics or face accusations of civil rights violations as they strain to meet quotas, according to current and former ICE officials.
This is contrary to what Tom Homan said would happen. WH spox Karoline Leavitt told the WaPo this story (of Trump’s demands for a higher body count) was false but wouldn’t elaborate. One ICE official claims that the list of “criminal suspects” was sufficiently long that there would be no problem meeting quotas while prioritizing public safety etc. Last year ICE told Congress there were approx. 670,000 immigrants who had criminal convictions or who had (merely) faced “criminal charges.” However WaPo goes on to say (per ICE presumably) that some were currently serving sentences. I’m sorry but it seems mad to dump criminals on either their country of origin or some other rather than keeping them away from society. However, this is all about the numbers.
You probably don’t need for Paul Hunker, a former ICE chief counsel in Dallas, to tell you this, but “ arresting serious offenders takes time, staff and planning — more time than quotas might allow.
“Quotas will incentivize ICE officers to arrest the easiest people to arrest, rather than the people that are dangerous noncitizens” ….
Could this be any worse? Yes. To beef up manpower for this deportation blitz Trump has apparently diverted additional personnel to supplement ICE from the DHS division that investigates “counterterrorism, drug smuggling, human trafficking cases, child exploitation and other crimes.”
I don’t think I need to editorialize. I believe that reporters Nick Miroff and Maria Sacchetti pretty much said it all.
Couldn’t upload suitable image from the library.
This is like my second diary ever.
