Spray Resistant Bugs Are A Reality!
"Genetic deterioration through man-made agents is the menace of our time, the last and greatest danger to our civilization”,
"Silent Spring" Rachel Carson, 1962
Spraying for mosquitoes kills most but not all of the insects.
The ability of an organism to withstand a poison, is a predictable consequence of repeated pesticide use. Pesticide resistance has developed within many classes of chemicals. Over 500 species of insects and mites are resistant to one or more insecticides. Could the Mosquito Abatement program create GIANT BLACK WIDOW SPIDERS in Florida? Giant Black Widow Spider This is one of many possible outcomes from spraying for mosquitoes that could happen in Florida.
"Super" mosquitoes have evolved to withstand insecticides, according to new research -- and the most "sobering" finding is the high rate in which a species known for carrying disease has developed mutations.
Mosquitoes that can carry tropic diseases are showing resistance to pyrethroid—a common group of insecticides used to treat them—according to a new study by U.S. Department of Agriculture ( USDA ) scientists and their collaborators.
An organism's resistance to insecticides can develop through gene mutations by:
1) Developing a means of detoxifying the pesticide
2) Altering the target site (part of the body’s metabolism affected by the pesticide) to reduce its sensitivity
3} Reducing the pesticide’s ability to bind
4) Decreasing pesticide penetration
A single resistance mechanism can convey resistance to two or more pesticides that have similar modes of action, called cross-resistance.
Multiple resistance is the ability to cope with pesticides of different modes of action.
The species as a whole has evolved resistance to 56 different chemical insecticides.
The Colorado potato beetleCan resist 56 different compounds and resistance levels can be very high
