WaPo getting desperate for subscribers, offers 90% off [1]

Like many of us here, I gave up my Washington Post subscription when Jeff Bezos went over to the dark side. I had originally subscribed when there was some kind of cheap offer, like $12/year, which renewed at something like $40. But last year it went to $120, and was due to renew again at that rate had I kept it up. It’s not my primary source of news — I also subscribe to the NYTimes, Boston Glob, and donate (these don't have a paywall) to the Forward and the Guardian. And of course I subscribe to DKos, and in fact refused to give money during the past few months’ “buy now before the price increase” type deals because I wanted DKos to get the higher rate from me ($90) which was charged today. Good information is worth paying for.

But after my Washington Post subscription ended, I started getting offers at lower prices. First it was “$1.50/week”, about $78/year. A week later, $40 for a year, then $120 thereafter. Today I took a glance at the front page (not on my regular clicklist any more) and it popped up an offer of $0.99/every four weeks or $29/month — that annual price sounds like a tax on people who can’t do math. Of course it jumps to $12/month after a year, if you don’t cancel and wait..

I haven’t taken the bait but we know how much we know circulation has fallen. I am concerned, however, that if it totally tanks, there will be nothing left for a post-Trump owner, if democracy is restored. I just don’t want Jeff to get rewarded for his own cupidity.
