Well, the snow show is over down here, the roads were fine yesterday, but it’s been a hell of a week down here in the swamps of Louisiana. We got 9 inches of snow where I live, and it shut down the city for 3 days. There are several bridges that froze over so when we were allowed to get out a little there were long detours around the city that GPS were unaware of. I had to go out and feed the fish, and that was fun, (NOT) and missed my allergy appointment because they were closed, along with everything else. Waffle House was closed, that’s how serious it was.
At my house the outside spigot froze and broke, pouring water under the trailer and generally making a mess. I didn’t know where the shut off was, but my friend Dave has a tool for that, so I went and got him and he helped me turn the water off. Dave also hooked me up with two 5 gallon water bottles for general use, as our water is under a boil advisory right now — the tanks were all drained and filled with contaminated water. So that’s fun. I ran the dishwasher anyway.
Mum was predictably unhelpful, screaming at me over the phone about not knowing where the water shut off was, or how to turn it off, and she doesn’t like Dave. So Dave saving the day was a bit of a foot to eat for her too. I always know how mad she is by whether or not she says “I love you” when we hang up. There’s been no love yous in a couple of days. Between the truck needing repairs and the house having a broken pipe, I’ve been a source of cash loss. And that is always a bad thing.
Now I have my house back for now, though I have to remember not to drink the water from the tap. Today is Shabbat, so it’s a quiet one for me, tuning into services on zoom and playing games. I’m off to the fish on Tuesday, and got a lot of shifts next month as well, it seems some of the kids aren’t very good at showing up when they are supposed to.
In other news I gave up on my grad school application and applied for another bachelors degree, this one in geology. I will have to take more math, and some harder science — physics for example — but it will be a new start, with no bad grades to drag me down. I’m really hoping I can get some scholarships and honors with this degree, and then see about grad school. I’m going to specialize in environmental science, the jobs should be good there. And I like rocks, geology was my science on my anthropology degree. I did very well in it. So now I will get to play with rocks, which wasn’t an option during the pandemic, and have fun learning without a limit on classes or opportunities. I think I’m going to take biology for my science this time, which is another step on the psych track with the lab. I want to be well rounded, and employable. I don’t think I can make it in the future on disability alone.
