Denmark has long been a friend and NATO ally of the United States. Following the 9/11 attacks on the United States, when the NATO Article 5 pledge of mutual defense was invoked for the first and still only time in NATO’s history, Danish troops fought and died alongside Americans and other allies in Afghanistan and Iraq. With a population of only about six million — a tiny fraction of the U.S. population — Denmark sent thousands of troops to Afghanistan and Iraq between 2002 and 2021. Of these, 53 were killed and hundreds injured. Previously, under Nazi occupation during World War II, Danish resistance fighters contributed significantly to the defeat of Nazi Germany by the United States and other allies.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
Nonetheless, according to the Financial Times, Newsweek, and other news outlets, Greenland-obsessed Donald Trump had a call with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen last week described by Danish and other European sources as “horrendous,” “aggressive and confrontational,” and “potentially very dangerous.” Predictably, the call included a threat of punitive tariffs against Denmark if it doesn’t hand Greenland over to the United States. Trump previously also suggested that he might use military force to take Greenland from Denmark.
“The [Americans’] intent was very clear,” said one source on the call, “They want [Greenland]. The Danes are now in crisis mode.” Said another source: “The Danes are utterly freaked out by this.”
Prime Minister Frederiksen is a member of Denmark’s Social Democratic Party and, by all appearances, a fine example of what it looks like to live in a country that hasn’t lost its mind. Donald Trump, in contrast, is a rabid animal, a national disgrace, and an international embarrassment who represents America at its worst and ugliest. During the call, the prime minister suggested ways in which Denmark, Greenland, and the United States could cooperate in defense and natural resource development, but Trump “was apparently unmoved by the counter-proposal,” insisting that Greenland must become U.S. property. The prime minister reiterated during the call that Greenland is not for sale and that Greenland’s future is up to the people of Greenland to decide.
As Reuters reports, Danish business leaders met with the prime minister to discuss possible responses to any trade war Trump might set off between the United States and Denmark over his obsession with taking possession of Greenland. Asked what Denmark’s response to any Trump tariffs might be, the country’s Minister for Trade and Industry said only, “We will deal with that, if it comes.” According to this report, Danish companies operating in the United States currently employ about 90,000 American workers. These jobs could be in danger if Trump continues his aggression against Denmark.
Again, Denmark is a longtime friend and ally of the United States. Now, thanks to Donald Trump, however, many in Denmark, in Greenland, and throughout Europe will see the United States as a dangerous adversary. And we are still less than a week into Trump’s second presidency.
