Among the stories of ICE round-ups is this one from Ruidoso, New Mexico.
Indigenous members of the Mescalero Apache tribe were detained and questioned in a public place in Ruidoso, NM. It is not clear what locale was targeted here. Ruidoso is a tourist town with a local ski resort, so this time of year is usually welcoming to thousands of people, unless your skin is brown. If so, expect to be pulled outside, even from a public place and demanded to provide your papers, please.
According to The NM Political Report, “ICE agents questioned a family standing in line in front of a Mescalero Apache tribal member and the family was escorted outside.”
Of course, the ICE agent made the racist assumption that all brown people only speak Spanish: “ICE agent approached the tribal member in Spanish to which the tribal member replied they spoke English.”
Also from the NM Political Report: “The ICE agent then asked the tribal member for a passport and in response, the tribal member presented their driver’s license and tribal identification to the ICE agent.”
Since this encounter, Tribal Leaders have resorted to publishing guidelines to Tribal members to remind them of their rights and how to react as the ICE purge continues.
