Having read xaxnar’s recent diary: Robert Reich brings a MUST READ from Canada (www.dailykos.com/... ), I clicked on through to Reich’s Substack post: A view from north of the border (robertreich.substack.com/... ) — in which Reich has re-posted a recent editorial by Andrew Coyne of the Toronto Globe and Mail, entitled Trump’s Election is a Crisis like No Other, Not Only for the U.S. But For the World.
At the bottom of the page — and this is really the point of this diary — I discovered a link to Reich’s post of January 1, entitled Trump will overplay his hand. Be ready for when he does. (robertreich.substack.com/...) — a re-post of a recent essay in Politico Magazine from Asli Aydintasbas of the Brookings Institution — which I find to be every bit as hopeful and encouraging as the Coyne piece is chilling and sobering.
I make a point of highlighting this piece because it provides both an historical and global perspective on the fight against autocracy from which I believe the American resistance to Donald Trump’s fascism can benefit greatly. It offers reassurance as well as suggestions of pragmatic, tangible measures to take in the coming months and years. Following is a summary of Aydintasbas’ essay, comprised of the six main points she’s making:
1: Don’t Panic — Autocracy Takes Time
2: Don’t Disengage — Stay Connected
3: Don’t Fear the Infighting
4: Charismatic Leadership Is a Non-Negotiable
5: Skip the Protests and Identity Politics
6: Have Hope
And here, once again, is that link:
