Marjorie Taylor Greene Goes Cartographic [1]

She's a recurring nightmare. She's a bleached blonde, bad built, butch body. She won my poll for the stupidest person in the House of Representatives. In the four years she's been in Congress, not a single bill she has introduced has become law.
Now she's an expert in cartography. She thinks Congress will pass her bill to officially rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
Trump has already signed an executive order to make the name change. Why does she think Congress needs to pass a bill?
Because the other main English speaking country thinks there is no support for it.
Internet personality Mario Nawfal relayed reporting from The Telegraph:
The British government has refused to adopt Trump's order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, insisting it will continue using the original unless the change gains widespread international recognition.
MTG responded with:
This is not like renaming a post office.
"We should force this to happen." "Force" it to happen. Are we going to go to war with countries that don't abide by our naming convention? Do we have Elise Stepanik tell everybody at the United Nations to change their maps or else? That's not going to go over well.
We could change the name it we owned it. Who do we buy it from? Mexico? It's international waters. Nobody owns it. This is not like China trying to enforce their dashed line in the hotly contested South China Sea.
China changed territorial lines with neighbors again with a map released in August of 2023 by the Ministry of Natural Resources of China. It laid claim to parts of India, Taiwan, Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia. Those countries argued that the map violated domestic and international laws. This new map included a ten dash line line that showed Taiwan as Chinese territory. The controversy over the nine dash line even came up in the movie Barbie, before China's release of the new map taking Taiwan.
A map is only considered legally binding if is part of a treaty between the affected countries. That means that Mexico and Cuba, the only other countries that have borders on the Gulf, would have to sign a treaty with the United States.
Mexico is laughing at us. The President of Mexico stood in front of a map from 1607, which showed the US as "America Mexicana," in response, after Trump first proposed the change .
Cuba is already outraged by Trump rescinding Biden's orders, reducing sanctions with Cuba. One removed the designation of Cuba as a sponsor of terrorism, and the other reducing limitations persons engaging with persons and entities in Cuba. The last one means being able to do business with Cuba. President Joe Biden signed these on January 14, 2025.
Cuba hasn't said anything yet.
Right after Trump signed the executive order, Marjorie said, "The American people are footing the bill to protect and secure the maritime waterways for commerce to be conducted. Our US armed forces protect the area from any military threats from foreign countries. It's our Gulf. The rightful name is Gulf of America, and it's what the entire world should refer to it as."
Might makes right doesn't always go over too well. Marjorie is sounding like transactional Donald. Taking that kind of attitude falls right into China's hand. Don't give them precedent.
This time, the world is laughing at us, and the US. Mostly at Donald Trump. I can find no other nation's response to Trump's order to make the Gulf, the Gulf of Mexico, other than the U.K. The rest of the world has the same problem we do. So many insane changes and edicts from Trump so fast, that we can't keep up with them.
Marjorie Taylor Greene just loves to add fuel to the fire and get the limelight. Also to ingratiate herself with Trump at every opportunity. But the moth going to the flame dies. We should be so lucky.
