Trump Shuts Down Medical Research via NIH [1]

Trump has driven a knife into the back of medical research in the United States.

His executive order cancelling study sections means that no research can be approved, nor grants awarded. NIH members cannot communicate with anyone, nor can they travel to conferences or to work with scientific studies. They may not be allowed to release papers for peer review or publishing, and they cannot invite patients into trials. And of course, they have implemented a hiring freeze.

Obviously, the lack of funding will be devastating for American Universities. And American health. The NIH is the single largest public funder of biomedical research in the world. Without that funding in basic research, American pharmaceutical companies would not be able to exist. Even a small delay means that deadlines for grants are missed, and researchers and universities may lose their access to funds. That is likely a feature.

MAGA hates medicine and science ever since Trump told them to blame medicine for his own failings in the COVID pandemic. Punishing people who keep us healthy is the kind of mindless flex that MAGA is good at. But by taking research funds away from universities, it removes a source of independent funding, making universities even more dependent upon the good will of local legislatures and rich donors than they are today. In red states particularly, but to some degree in all states, this means more political and thought control of universities by conservatives.

You can and should call your Congress people about this, but this is emblematic of where we are headed as a country: a rejection of the work of government and the relentless pursuit of absolute thought control over education.
