Breaking the Trump Coalition [1]

I am active in the fishing community here in California, which is roughly 80% pro-Trump. Water issues are a significant concern, particularly the ongoing diversion of Northern California water supplies to Southern California agribusiness—a deeply contentious issue. This tension has been further heightened by the closure of the salmon fishing season for the past two years.

One of Trump’s first-day executive orders exacerbated the situation by encouraging additional water diversions, prioritizing the interests of financial contributors in the agricultural and development industries over the needs of many of his own political supporters. While it’s tempting to say “I told you so,” such an approach is neither productive nor wise. Instead, I use this as a clear example of the opportunity afforded to us by Trump’s willingness to harm his political supporters for the benefit of his financial contributors.

Moving forward, I believe it’s critical to frame our opposition to Trump’s actions in this way whenever possible. By consistently highlighting how Trump prioritizes the interests of his contributors at the expense of his supporters, we can begin to create a division between these groups—an essential step in building a new Democratic coalition.
