Trump’s Executive Orders Range from the Criminal to Nasty and Ridiculous [1]

In her sermon at an inaugural prayer service, Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, the Episcopal bishop of Washington, pleaded with Donald Trump, “In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now,” children, immigrants without documentation, and the LGBTQ community. Trump’s response was to criticize the “so-called Bishop” as a “Radical Left hard line Trump hater” and to demand that she and the church apologize to the public.
When you elect a convicted criminal to the Presidency, you get a criminalized White House. Donald Trump’s immediate Executive Orders ranged from the criminal to the ridiculous. Many face legal challenges so they cannot immediately be implemented, but a rightwing Supreme Court with three Trump appointees has the ultimate authority to reinvent the meaning of the Constitution in order to accommodate Trump and his allies, assuming Trump will obey the Court if a majority rules against him.
On day 1 Trump pardoned more than1,500 members of the mob convicted or facing trial for attacking the United States Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, including leaders of extremist groups like the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys. These are his people.
Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the United States from the 2016 Paris Climate Agreement and the World Health Organization, actions that place the entire world in increased jeopardy of extreme weather and another pandemic.
Another Trump executive order attempts to redefine birthright citizenship, denying citizenship to the children of noncitizens in violation of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. He also ordered federal agencies to stop issuing passports and social security numbers to babies born in the United States to parents who lack legal status, another violation of the 14th Amendment. On Day 2, Attorney Generals from 22 states filed suits in federal district courts to block Trump’s attempt to deny to children born in the United States whose parents were unauthorized immigrants.
Trump declared a national emergency at the southern border and announced he would invoke the 1798 Alien Enemies Act assuming wartime authority to use the military to close the border and target undocumented immigrant suspected of being gang members, criminals, and members of foreign terrorist organizations. This appears to be a violation of the 1878 Posse Comitatus Act that outlaws the use of any part of the Army or Air Force to execute domestic laws except when expressly authorized by the Constitution or an act of Congress.
As part of his war on undocumented immigrants, Trump locked online applications for refugee status and ordered federal law enforcement to take legal action against any state or local institutions or officials that refuse to cooperate with attempted mass deportations. In New York City, school principals were instructed not to permit non-New York City law enforcement agents, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) into schools unless they had a warrant naming particular individuals and not to permit them to question a student unless the student was accompanied by a parent or responsible guardian.
Trump froze federal hiring, targeting the Internal Revenue Service, to protect the wealth of the nation’s billionaire oligarchy.
Trump announced the start of his promised trade war. Beginning February 1, there will be a punitive 25% tariff on products imported from Canada and Mexico. Expect to pay more for everything.
Trump rescinded a 2021 Biden era executive orders requiring the federal Education Department to protect students from discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation. He ordered all federal departments to drop diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, announced that the United States would only recognize only two sexes, male and female, that would be defined based on the reproduction cells at conception, and directed states to stockpile enough lethal injection drugs to facilitate death penalty executions. These directives are mostly vindictive. Trump may not like it, but people who don’t identify according to his schema are also entitled to equal protection of the law. No Western European country has a death penalty. The United States is in a special group of murderous countries that includes China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and North Korea.
Trump revoked former President Biden's order that would have placed sanctions on extremist Israeli settlers on the West Bank, empowering terrorist attacks on Palestinian communities.
And now we get to the ridiculous. As part of his America First agenda, Trump signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America and Mount Denali Mount McKinley and in his inaugural address he promised to place an American flag on Mars as Elon Musk burst into ecstatic applause.
