Back in the day, the DOJ would investigate the background of candidates for a presidential pardon. On Monday, an impatient President, uninterested in nuance or details, waved his presidential pardon wand and let every Jan 6 criminal go free— with zero concern for their acts on that day or in their past. One of these lucky criminals found his legal absolution to be short-lived.
Daniel Charles Ball (39), not surprisingly a Florida resident, had been arrested on May 2023 after his indictment on a lengthy list of federal felony charges for his actions during the Capitol riot:
assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon
using fire or an explosive to commit any felony
obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder
entering or remaining on restricted grounds without lawful authority to do so while carrying or using a deadly or dangerous weapon
knowingly engaging in any act of physical violence while carrying or using a deadly or dangerous weapon
disorderly or disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds while carrying or using a deadly or dangerous weapon
misdemeanor offenses of disorderly conduct in a Capitol building
acts of physical violence in the Capitol grounds or buildings
stealing government property.
His arrest had come after his probation officer tipped off the authorities to his identity. At the time of his arrest for his Jan 6 crimes (May 2, 2023), he had already been arrested the week before by the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office for allegedly assaulting seven people including two law enforcement officers in unrelated charges in Florida.
On Wednesday Mediaite reported that Ball had again been arrested. This time by Trump’s DOJ. The article explained the circumstances thus:
Online federal court records of Ball’s indictment show he was charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon on Aug. 6, 2024, listing his past convictions as domestic violence battery by strangulation in 2017 and then resisting law enforcement with violence and battery on law enforcement officer, both in 2021. The arrest warrant filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida was issued on the same day as the indictment, and now notes that Ball was arrested on Jan. 22, 2025. He has not yet entered a plea.
