The Ignore-uration of Donald Trump [1]

As I promised myself and my readers, Monday, Inauguration Day, was Ignore-uration Day for me. I got up early to help pack and prepare meals for delivery to the poor and single mothers at a local church. After that, I watched and read some of Dr. King’s most poignant speeches, and I had never watched so much ESPN. Fortunately, as my distraction that night, I watched a valiant but failed effort by Notre Dame to overcome a huge lead by Ohio State in winning the NCAA National Football Championship. Also, as promised, I plugged back into the news on Tuesday. I was first struck that the Republican Party and Trump supporters are apoplectic that an Episcopal minister [Mariann Edgar Budde] paraphrased the words of Jesus, “Have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now,” asking mercy for the poor and immigrants. Yet conservatives, writ large, celebrated the release of violent felons who attacked the citadel of American democracy.
Let the fascism begin…
Trump, who had hinted at subverting the Constitution, wrote in 2022: “A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution. Our great ‘Founders’ did not want, and would not condone, False and fraudulent Elections!” In the first wave of his executive orders, one of President Trump’s first actions was to toss out the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of citizenship to natural-born babies of immigrants in America. So far, eighteen state attorney generals have filed lawsuits to resist his actions. Many are dismissing his executive order and believe, most certainly, it would be overturned eventually by the Supreme Court. Color me a skeptic; some—of those same experts—also scoffed at the Supreme Court granting blanket immunity for the President.
One might think that an administration that botched a pandemic would strengthen its partnership with health organizations, but Mr. Trump immediately withdrew the US from the World Health Organization (WHO). Again, this move was probably a result of Mr. Trump’s grudge against the WHO, which criticized his handling of COVID-19. In 2020, Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, special adviser to the director general of the World Health Organization, said he found “most” of what Donald Trump said at his briefing on the novel coronavirus "incoherent.” On his way into retirement, former President Joe Biden warned of the impending oligarchy. Before the corpse of the Biden presidency was allowed to get cold, the open grift has been strewn across the landscape. Aside from selling plated gold watches and golden-colored sneakers, the Open Grift is no longer in the weeds but strewn across the landscape. Along with Trump bibles and trading cards, Mr. Trump and his wife, Melania, sell First Couple-themed cryptocurrency.
Seeing the most prestigious office in the world reduced to an executive version of the Home Shopping Network is appalling and an embarrassment. In the flurry of executive orders was an unscientific order meant to outlaw transgender people. So, along with outlawing birthright citizenship, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, we get to call Caitlyn Jenner “Bruce” again. As the absurdity begins, remember, there is always ESPN.
